A children's book with a diffe
Review date: 17th June 2025

Bobbin and his Popular Penguin pals is a children’s rhyming book with a difference. On Bobbin’s quest to find the elusive and unusual small blue penguin, the author takes us on a meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated journey across the southern hemisphere. Who would have known that penguins live in varying habitats and not just one, that there are 18 different types, and vary so much in size. In charming verse, we learn what penguins eat, how they rear their young and even the colour of their poo!

Children aged 7 to 11 would be most likely to enjoy the book, although younger children with good concentration and an interest in nature would also be captivated.

This book would make a great gift.

A clever bumper rhyming book,
Review date: 16th July 2025

I’ve just read Bobbin and His Popular Penguin Pals, the third book in Shelagh Fairbank’s series, and it’s absolutely lovely. If you’ve read the first two about Bobbin the Elf and the Queen Fairy, you’ll know how clever, warm and engaging these stories are, and this one is no different, except that you get many books in one, as she realistically covers every type of penguin from around the world.

This time, Bobbin meets a group of penguins, each with their own little quirks and personalities. The story has that comforting feel to it, the kind of book you’d want to read snuggled up with a child at bedtime or can be used as teaching material about penguins as it is factually correct. It’s also quietly thoughtful, offering lessons about friendship, kindness, overcoming fear, and not judging others too quickly.

I think what I like most about Shelagh’s books is that they’re cleverly written in rhyme, good-natured, with a massive pinch of magic. They are educational and straightforward without ever feeling teachy. The illustrations by the author are, like her other two books, charming, numerous and add to the story as well, e.g. maps.

If you’re looking to learn more about all the types of penguins of the world, with the added bonus of a great story, this is a real treat. It’s a lovely addition to the series and also works as a standalone book.

This book is a beautifully written and illustrated tale taking you into Bobbin’s travels in his quest to learn about penguins. Every time our grandchildren see shows on TV about penguins they go “we know that already, Bobbin taught us”! You really feel immersed in each environment and through Shelagh’s delightful storytelling, you can visualise each and every scene over and above the illustrations. Unlike a lot of children’s books you also get value for money as it offers so much.

Grandad is number one ace for finding this.
