When Theo asked me to read this story, with a view to illustrating it, I was hooked. I loved it. Page after page I couldn't stop laughing at the different characters, and antics they get Marrow in to. (I became annoyed when my children needed me because I had to keep putting it down! ) Theo has a way of writing that is gentle and very descriptive. He does use some high reader vocabulary and some words of his own making, but that's because he writes in the way a character speaks, (and thinks), and you find yourself reading with an accent sometimes, (Australian or Irish for example). It is recommended for children 9+ but, that said, we have had nothing but good reviews from children, adults and "Big Kids" alike. Grandparents also enjoy reading it to their grandchildren, putting on the voices of the characters and belly laughing at the funny things that happen in the book. Take a look at the sample and see for yourself what YOU think.....
This book was a wonderful read, very Alice in Wonderlandish something you could get lost in.The author gets into a child's mind and expands it,looking forward to number 2, please .
If you have not been able to resist the temptation to buy this great-looking, wonderfully enchanting, magically entrancing book for your kids I can only congratulate you. You are in for hours of complete bliss enjoying the gripping story of eleven- year old Marrow, who, like once her renowned predecessor Alice, in a manner most inexplicable tumbles into a fairytale world in which the impossible turns out to be not only quite possible but even completely normal. But there the equation ends, as Marrow is quite a different modern-day girl who knows her own mind and adapts, unfazed and curious, to every new adventurous meeting with a succession of the most fantastic figures during her quest for the way home. Wildly exciting meetings they are, however strange sometimes, or possibly slightly frightening, or at times even downright dangerous. But just as often hilariously funny, or deeply touching... never a dull moment in this utterly captivating tale! Some of these many amazing figures become dear friends who accompany Marrow throughout the story and who will stay with you long after you have closed the book, vagely sorry, vagely wondering what will become of them now that this adventure is over.... Theo L. Gardener has written a lovely story full of excitement, laughter and unobtrusive wisdom, enriched by his purely personal, unique talent for playing with words and puns which makes for extra interest and enjoyment (along with some extra linguistic education to boot!).
An enjoyable read, full of gentle humour, I laughed out loud at the courtroom antics, the snail jokes with Marrow obviously enjoying her own jokes, and enjoyed the the many imaginative creatures she encounters. By the time I had reached the end, the rapport twixt Marrow and the skeleton left me wanting, nay, demanding MORE. Brilliant ending.
Reading Marrow is a crazy adventure- you never know what wonderous, mystical and mishtevious creature is around the corner! Marrow is strong minded, brave, and is never afraid to hold her own, no matter what strange situation she finds her self in! This book is sure to spark the imagination.” - Ruby Barnhill, Actress
Excitable – inquisitive – fearless – bit of a know-it-all eleven year old marrow gets rudely pulled through a small keyhole in a painting. She then finds herself in an oddball forest world of creatures and things she knows about, and a few she does not! Some of them see her as a tasty meal on legs, and others try to help her find her way back.
As she navigates her way through this endless leary world of wonder, fun, and danger, she must use her imagination, wits, and girl guide know-how to get out of endless scrapes and adventures!
