Songs For The Farmland Museum

Description

Traditional & contemporary songs of Farming & Countryside Life

Singing songs has always been an integral part of our culture. Over the centuries people living in the countryside have sung songs celebrating the seasons, their work and their lives, as well as notable events or people’s misfortunes.

This selection of songs has been put together to reflect aspects of the Farmland Museum’s collections and celebrate the site’s farming heritage. Five of the songs chosen have got local connections and two of the original compositions are unlikely to have been heard by more than a handful of people.

We would like to dedicate this album to the memory of Bob Giddings, a local resident with lifelong connections to Denny who loved his music.

The album is available for download. You can also purchase and download individual tracks.

A big thankyou to the Farmland Museum and the Trustees for making this project happen. Thanks to:

  • EFDSS, the amazing staff at the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library and The Full English Project for assistance in researching material for this project.
  • Mary Humphries, who through her work on Cambridgeshire material and the Enid Porter project pointed me in the direction of some wonderful material, not all of which I have been able to include.
  • Andy Dewar for his amazing work in the studio, bits of percussion and his support and encouragement.
  • Chris Sadler for concertina playing and chorus singing and Alan Dunn for the piano playing on Animal Farm.
