Author of Motorcycles in Mind.
Originally from Manchester I moved to Greater London in 1987 for work. Intending to stay for only one year, I’m still there.
I’ve worked as a barman, courier, retail sales manager, manufacturing machine operator, laboratory supervisor and police covert surveillance officer. Quite a mix!
I’m a freelance writer for aviation and motorcycle magazines, and have recently published my first long form book – a memoir “Motorcycles in Mind: A Route to Serenity”.
My two long-time obsessions have been motorcycling and flying. I passed my bike test back in the early 1980s and gained my pilot’s licence in 2007. The two interests often seem to go hand-in-hand!
I discovered the power of motorcycling by accident. In 1982 a stolen push bike was replaced by a moped, bought because it was cheaper than catching the bus. I had no interest in motorcycling then – it was just a means to an end – but during a pretty awful time in my life I realised the only thing helping my state of mind was riding. Anywhere, everywhere, the Peak District in the middle of the night, or just commuting by day.
I guess now we call it ‘mindfulness’ but all I knew was riding was indeed a route to serenity for me. Motorcycles in Mind is the story of my life; the good times and the bad. How riding has been such an important part of my life and in the lives of other riders I’ve met along the way.
