Home Audiobook Recording: Top 5 Tips

Recording an audiobook at home can sound professional with the right setup and habits. These five tips will help you get clean, consistent, listener-friendly audio.

  1. Control Your Recording Space

Choose the quietest room possible and reduce echo. Soft furnishings (curtains, rugs, pillows) absorb sound and make your voice warmer. Turn off fans, AC, and notifications before recording.

  1. Use the Right Mic Placement

Position your microphone 6–8 inches from your mouth, slightly off to the side to reduce harsh “P” and “S” sounds. Stay in the same position throughout the session to keep tone consistent.

  1. Record in Short, Focused Sessions

Your voice tires faster than you think. Record in 30–60 minute blocks to maintain energy, clarity, and pacing. Take water breaks to avoid mouth noise and vocal strain.

  1. Read for the Listener, Not the Page

Maintain a steady pace, clear articulation, and natural emotion. Imagine telling the story to one person. Pause briefly at chapter breaks and after major sentences to make editing easier.

  1. Monitor and Check Quality Often

Always wear headphones while recording. Do a short test before each session and listen back for background noise, distortion, or mouth clicks before continuing.
