Description

‘100 Things to Learn before you’re 10’ is a parenting book. Drawing on 40 years teaching experience, it explains why every child would benefit from the little extra help it provides during their formation years.

This book is packed with examples, activities, insights and stories. It helps show you how to make sure your children learn the skills they need to get the most out of school and life. Give your child what they really need so that they become happier, more confident and self assured as they learn. They will grow to be well rounded adults!

It is during the first 12 years after birth that each life develops the framework for its future.

Parents who are juggling the demands of modern life and work, while they are raising their children ask many questions. They may often feel their children ‘could do better’ and become very concerned if a child’s school report highlights this. However, many parents aren’t confident with changing children’s attitudes, what to teach or how to really motivate and encourage them. Especially if the children have ‘switched off’ and no longer respond to what their parents say.

This book addresses these issues and questions and looks at the reasons why so many children underperform at school and what can be done about aligning them at core, so that they stay connected to the positive influences that are in them at birth. It puts forward tried and tested lessons, tools and strategies that have been developed during forty years of teaching experience and have been repeatedly proven effective with children.

Reader reviews and ratings:

"An essential read for all parents & teachers. If only mine had read this book, especially the chapter on concentration, my lack of concentration would not have been criticised and considered disruptive but it would have been recognised and I would have been taught how to concentrate. A a grown woman only now, after reading 100 things I now how to concentrate."

"Fantastic, very well written, easy to read and highly recommendable - the author clearly knows what she is talking about."

In my experience when you first become a parent there is a lot of literature widely available to guide you through those early years. By the time your child starts school you feel that you have got to grips with parenthood and stop seeking advice. This is the time though when the real challenges start and suddenly you can feel lost and struggle to know how to best support your child's learning. Parent forums are a great place to share your problems but often it is difficult to find the right answers and know what is the right thing to do.

This book is great as it acts as a handy reference guide, providing help and guidance on many of the same issues we all face as parents on a regular basis including how they can lack concentration, motivation and how we can remain patient. The lessons taught are simple and easy to put in to practice, having already tried a few of the exercises out on my children I can see how they work and will benefit them long term.

As a mother of a 3, 7 and 8 year old I am very keen to utilise this book and look forward to seeing the results.""

New book 100 Things To Learn Before You're 10, aims to provide a roadmap to help parents and their children navigate the obstacles and misunderstandings that often arise during the first ten years of little ones' lives - and to give kids a lot of skills which will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.

Author Gail Hugman has used her decades of experience as a teacher to show parents how they can help their children to navigate early childhood without battling the whole time, and then later to complement what they are learning at school. The aim is to prevent and resolve common childhood problems that she has seen come up repeatedly in her 40 years of teaching.

The book gets to the heart of the difference between wanting children to just DO something, and actually working with the children to want to do things for themselves, from homework to eating their supper and this is a really useful approach.

If they can learn self-confidence and assertiveness, Gail says, children are more switched on and engaged throughout their days both at home and school. And kids then grow up into confident, motivated and happy little people, armed with tools that they will need for life – for coping with both success and failure.

Using games, anecdotes, visualisations and exercises that are both fun and engaging for parents and children, the book has a lot in it. And if 100 things seems like a large number, well, it is and you don't have to feel you need to get through them too quickly – you have ten years after all, right?

Each chapter starts with a short story about an issue that parents and children will easily relate to, then explain the concepts at play and breaks them down even further with practical tools and tips to take away.

It's so inspiring to see children flourish and become excited when they start learning the skills in the book and of course the whole family reaps the rewards too.

"When children become willing participants in their self-development life becomes easier for them, especially when they understand the reasons behind these essential concepts. They grow in confidence and self-esteem because they know that they have the tools to handle school, family life, the playground and beyond", adds Gail.
